Dec 16th
All the regulars were in attendance for our annual Christmas bash - BM, MS, DM, RD and JB, with AW finally getting his dates right to help dispose of the mince pies, mulled wine and Christmas cake.
We arrived to find the green had been solid tined, and not much other work done, but we couldn't stop BM putting some seed/top dressing on the worn patches to hopefully take advantage of the unseasonally warm weather.
Next year's Summer Wine Club will reconvene on Wednesday, January 6.
A merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all our readers.

Dec 9th
A full complent of five today- JB, BM, DM,MS and RD - and a rare appearance from AW, who thought the Christmas party was this week.
More work done on the inside edging boards (just two edges to go now) then we can start with the cross bracing.
The green was cut again (seven bins of cuttings removed) and work continued on repairing fence panels and cutting them down to accommodate the kick boards when the new fence in erected next year.
Next week no work will be done as the crew will be celebrating Christmas. Mince pies, pork pie, mulled wine (not to mention the usual supply of brown milk) and many more nibbles will be available.
Anyone who fancies popping down for an hour or two will be more than welcome.
Festivities get under way in the pavilion at around 10am.

Dec 2nd
In attendance - DM, BM, MS and RD.
At last . . . all the new boards for the outside edges are now in place and work has started, thanks to BM, on replacing boards on the green side of the pavilion edge. Still much more to do but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
The SWC Xmas party is planned for 16th Dec - all welcome. As usual brown milk will be there in abundance - as is the norm.

Nov 25th
Four in attendance this week - DM, BM, MS and RD.
After turning out for two weeks on the trot, JB had to have a rest and was taking a five-day break in sunny southern England.
Work continued on the outside edging boards on the start edge and the pavilion ditch was cleared of debris.
Early delivery - at 8am this morning - was taken of 40 lengths of timber to line the inside edges of all the ditches.
The good news about these are that they arrived ALREADY TREATED. That'll save us a lot of work.

The same five as last week - BM, MS, DM, RD and JB - were in attendance.
Work carried on with the new edging boards and it's now three down, one to go, then we can get down to the inside edges.
We've had to dig quite a bit of soil and roots out to accommodate the deeper boards on the outside of the ditches and it's taking a bit longer to complete than we first thought.
The wind caused a bit of damage to some fences/posts and some minor repairs were carried out.
Some professional help will be recruited to carry out permanent repairs.

Four members this week - DM, BM, MS, RD, and a cameo appearance from CC JB.
As the weather had been kind we decided to cut the green and surrounds. Seven bins full of cuttings from the green and I lost count of how many times Brian emptied the bin while cutting the surrounds - a mammoth task. MS and JB continued with the work clearing the top ditch, |
Nov 4th
After last week's excitement, it was normal service resumed with three hardy souls - BM, MS and RD - turning out to continue with the edging boards around the green (DM had leave of absence to attend a funeral).
The outside boards were completed on the equipment shed side and the field edge and all the patio areas were swept clear of leaves (no mean feat).

Oct 28th
Three regulars turned out this week - DM, BM and RD - but no work was done on the green.
Instead, our efforts were concentrated on repairing damage caused when the club was broken into.
The thieves* jemmied their way in through the emergency exit door and broke into the bar area through the shutters.
Thankfully, very little was taken and there was no cash in the till . . . shame!
Hopefully we'll be back to normal next week and carry on with the new edging boards.
* Not actually the words used by reporter RD !

Last week our friendly contractor heavily scarrified the green which is now consequently out of action for a while! Another fine day where work continues on the edging, as previously mentioned, this is a big job and will take several weeks. MS was back today to join the crew while KR paid a flying visit to take the photos!

Three regulars were in attendance as MS and KR were in holiday mode, leaving BM, DM and RD to get the closed-season schedule under way.
No cutting done this week but the mower cut was raised to 8mm ready for the winter period.
The green was given its autumn feed and work started on putting the new boards around the green - this is going to be a major task.

Sept 10th
The Summer Wine crew met for their last Thursday date before reverting to or winter schedule..
Dave M, BM, RD and Doug M turned out for the regular tasks of green and surround cutting, edge trimming and general tidying.
A start was made on trimming the hedges with the top hedge (opposite the pavilion) trimmed top and side (just the field side to be done).
The other hedge - hopefully - will be done next week when we hope to welcome back MS and KR for our regular Wednesday morning turnout.
Well done boys and keep up all the good work, I will not be back till early October, this week I will be cricketing and next two Wednesdays I will be in sunnier climes! Keith

Four of us there today. Mower has been corrected and green is looking even better. Edges trimmed and strimmed. Surrounds mown along with some weeding. Ditches may look a bit untidy for a few weeks or so because it is intended to replace most of the current edging boards with new ASAP. The weeds will then be removed at same time.Edging boards have been started on by our resident Picasso.

Three regulars turned out again - DM, BM, RD - plus a new apprentice, DLM. Rumours are that KR might make a show next week !
Surrounds and edges cut, green scarified and cut after mower adjusted to a lower summer level.
The good news is that the new scaffold boards arrived so we'll get them treated asap.

May 6th
Three members of the SWC turned out - DM, BM, RD. (the cornerstone)
Surrounds cut and edges trimmed, green scarified and cut and a bit of path weeding on the far side of the pavilion. No painting this week!
Rumours are that 200 metres of scaffold board will arrive today. These will be used for the internal and external edging of the green - a fair bit of work ahead!

No St. Georges day celebrations here today, for the crew. Only three members turned out this week. Green cut, surrounds cut and edges trimmed and strimmed. Two benches got a second coat of Fenceguard treatment.
Also, the team from Tesco's turned up and began painting the outside window frames in the main club house. Not-so-good news was that several frames were beyond repair and would need replacing within a couple of years.

A full house with some sunshine saw the crew working hard. ~Green mown with freshly serviced mower, edges trimmed, surrounds cut, composting area enlarged while pavillion windows cleaned and polished. Green is looking good but would benefit from more sun.
No sign of any more moles/ |
March 11th
A near full house this week (one of us was living it up at Cheltenham racecourse) and another visit from club captain JB (and he didn't turn up just for the doughnuts).
After 3 or 4 weeks without result, success, finally, in the mole hunt.
Fence/gate painting continued and the green received more spring treatment.
More running repairs to the back fence should do the trick, thanks to a big hammer and expertise of MS.

All but one of the crew managed to make this weekly appointment. More use of paintbrushes against fence was continued, Winter debris cleaned out from ditched . Mole traps were also reset. Much needed sun helped the green look good. sun will also help control the moss (along with liquid iron sulphate. Man with machine arrived to verti drain (poke a hole or two) into the green. |

Painting of the patio fence completed and work of the gazebo started.
Green edges cut and mole traps set again - no luck in catching the little blighters over the last week.
Club captain arrived just as tea and doughnuts were being served, perfect timing JB.

Painting of the fence was continued.Still desperately require some green edging (scaffold boards or the like). anybody got any ideas?

January 28th
With two of the team in foreign climes and unfriendly weather in Earlswood, today was cancelled. The green will have to look after itself !
January 21st
Another miserable day saw all but one of the team turn up (I was the one - deciding to spend time in a warm pub!). Moss preventsaion liquid applied to green. Some moss removed from fencing was about all that could be done.
January 14th
On a cold morning, a snow covered green greeted a depleted SWC team on there return to work. Amazingly, work was found to keep them occupied. The biggest job was to remove fallen leaves which was then followed by a general tidy up
