No work today - just mince pies and mulled wine and more. All this years volunteers were there today plus a couple of welcome guests. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all members from your Summer Wine Crew.

Another full compliment of volunteers braved the cold weather. Green cut, probably for the last time this year, and treated with autumn and winter dressing. Another million or so leaves collected. Parts of fence coated with preserver.

26th Nov
Again all (5 of us) present and correct with an extra 2 helpers volunteering their labour - Thanks JB & TT. More painting of the fence along with leaf collection were some of the chores done, while the hot water tank was draining and another part of the fence has been jet washed. A faulty outdoor light unit was also rectified.
19th Nov
Full house today. Leaves swept off the green and surrounds, but trees still have plenty in reserve before they finally empty. An important date has been agreed for the summer wine crew, the 10th December, which will be the annual Christmas get together. all gate crashers welcome.
1st Nov
Not much done on last two Wednesdays due to holidays etc. but the green cut this lovely Sat morning and is looking good !

One short of a full house this morning. Green cut, edges mown, and even more stationary objects treated to a coat of wood preserver. The garden furniture has also been stashed for wintering. Green looks great - secret must be not to bowl on it !
External and internal edges of the green desperately needs redoing. Scaffolding boards have been sourced (free!) but need transport to collect. |
15th Oct
All the usual suspects were in or on or around the green today. Green cut and treated with autumn dressing. Painting of the wood work - benches and fence etc has been started. All the flower containers have been emptied.

In the last few weeks the surrounding hedge has been trimmed and tidied, a new compost bin has been built, guttering on the pavillion cleared and normal grass cutting duties have been carried out.The green is still open and bowlable although the normal thrice weekly cut has been reduced to once per week.
We are desperately in need of scaffolding boards (or similar) as most of the current edging boards around the green are rotten. PB has managed to locate some from his contacts but collecting them is currently a problem. The boards will not fit in a car and probably not a transit size van. Anybody out there that can help us ?

Apologies for lack reports in recent weeks. This is mainly because of family commitments during school holidays and also my occasional visit to the cricket at Edgbaston. Hopefully normal service will be resume soon. The green has survived a long season in a mainly dry summer and will be treated to a rest over the winter period. Watch this space!
17th July
An afternoon visit for the crew, for a change as green being used as a neutral semi-final venue, where Moseley only let Moorpool score 22 points between the 6 players! Green looked yellow after several days of baking sun. green watered. (all four barrels of collected rainwater were emptied). Patches topped up with top soil. Edges trimmed and surrounds mown.
26th June
Another fine and sunny day. Hedges trimmed, surrounds maintained and green watered.
19th June
Three regulars this week for the SWC - DM, BM, RD.
Surrounds cut and edges trimmed/strimmed as usual.
Bottom ditch de-weeded and patio areas ditto and swept.
Looking very smart, even if I say so.
Next week we plan to give the hedges a trim - weather permitting.

Just three of the regulars turned out for the summer wine club this week - BM, DM, RD.
The surrounds were cut and edges trimmed.
The green was cut after the mower was adjusted and the lake cleared from in front of the pavilion (two binfuls and cuttings removed - and that after the green was cut in a rare 'dry' spell yesterday by Keith. (Think you mean persisting down - not 'dry' - Keith)
Several patch repairs have been made to bare areas on the green.

Me not there today - I had a sick note, but thanks to Rob for the update:-
Just three old stagers turned out this week, but we got through plenty of work. Green surrounds and ditch edges cut and boundaries strimmed. Edge of raised patio area painted (brick-red concrete paint plus top-coat of white gloss). Mower cut was lowered and green cut, removing FIVE full bins of cuttings.

Inside of pavilion is still being upgraded (shelves etc. Usual maintenance on the green and surrounds. The grass is growing so fast in the recent warm and showery weather, that the green has been cut 4 days consecutively. Steps to the pavilion have been painted red. Green looking good but despite lowering of the blades to cut the grass shorter (not yet summer cut) the green is not as fast as some would like. This is probably because of the rain we have had over the last few months has not helped the water table to find its normal weather and is keeping the green moist. This will hopefully change now the sun seems to have arrived. A birds nest with several chicks has been discovered - not too sure of the breed but very noisy!

1st May
The sharp ones amongst you will have noticed that there has been no news posted on this page for last few weeks. No news does not mean that the green and surrounds have been neglected. Green has been cut several times - obviously! and also fertilised. Usual around the green work is ongoing while the club house is still being modified.

Green lightly scarrified. Surrounds and green cut. Edging done. Work almost completed in kitchen area

Green prepared for season opener later on today. Hoping the current pollution level improves for the teams and that you see some sun.Good luck to all

A good turn out, of at least 7 club members - think this might be a record for the crew. New sink is now plumbed in and working. Kitchen / Bar area shelves stacked. Seating now finalised. Old blackboard removed - to be replaced with white boards. Only work done on the green was external ind internal edging. Seems like the crew have worn out the original kettles and have had to have the replaced! |
19th March
A busy day with a full compliment of bodies. The sun also shone in celebration. More work on the new layout for the pavillion. Tonne and a half of top dressing moved from storage, Benches returned from winter hibernation and are now useable. Despite KRs best efforts to set himself alight with a can of petrol, a bonfire was started to burn all old kitchen cupboards etc. a man with big toy arrived to hollow tine (2500 holes per square metre), reseed, add top dressing and verti drain the green. Green was also fed with spring dressing.

An early mist did not stop the intrepid crew, who all turned up. Again we had a visit from the club captain but this time we put him to work! Green swept to "stand up" the grass before a cut. Meanwhile old cupboards, sink area and some of the benches have been dismantled so that work can be started on the new kitchen area. BM has reseeded some of the bare patches - hopefully these will germinate in this recent warm and dry weather. Surrounds also mown. A few woods were rolled on the green - slightly heavier than summer pace but not too bad considering the winter weather.

5th March
A full house today - and plenty of sunshine! After the usual shouting and kicking of the scarrifier it eventually started. Once started it did not not finish until MS had done the green and then the surrounding grass (first time ever?). Green mown, for 3rd time this year, and edged. Painting of all woodwork now on stop as we seem to have completed this project. Surrounding grass by fences have also been strimmed. In unexpected inspection by club captain JB was welcomed - who seems to make sure he is there for tea time! We also had an extra helper today in DM who cleaned all the ditches from various winter debris - Thanks all

A short handed team in sunshine (!) managed to almost complete the wood preservation project, while the grass surrounding the edge has been given its first cut of the year. Last weeks moss prevention seems to have all ready started working, while fertiliser is also kicking in. Green is looking better now sun has actually shone. Still wetter than normal but looking good. Another wind damaged fence panel has been repaired.
|
19th February
Dry weather at last and a full crew. First job was to repair wind damaged fencing. Scarrifier would not start - this job put back till next week. Green mown and even more wood preserver added to fence. Moss treatment sprayed onto the green. Photo's added for Bill as he has noticed recent lack of them!! |

12th February
For those hard souls that braved the weather and turned up at the green for the weekly work party, the rain curtailed any hope of anything worthwhile being accomplished. Hopefully next week will be kinder to us all.
5th February
No news or photos today - work postponed due to bad weather !
29th January
It has been confirmed that a very unhelpful driver arrived at 14:30 (supposedly a morning delivery!) last week, and BM had to lump 40X25kg bags into club premises by himself !! Bags, today, have now been tidied away. Wood preserving was started but quickly called off due to rain.
22nd January

On a damp and murky morning the crew arrived at the green to be greeted with a paddling pool in the middle of the green. The first job for this weeks depleted crew was to sweep the rain soaked green free of surface water. When dry, top soil was applied where needed. More wood preservation liquid applied to the woodwork that had been kept dry from recent wet weather. The lean to storage area emptied in preparation for expected morning delivery of 30 plus bags of autumn feed and top soil. As yet no news of this delivery has been confirmed although this mornings crew were prepared to shift the item across the green for safe storage. We guess for driver is having problems locating our club!

15th January
A full house of personal today. Green treated to first cut of the year along with more jet washing of fence. The lean to has been tidied up and floor extended. More wood preserver applied to fence work..

8th January
First meet of the year is planned for around 10:00am - hope pavillion not blown down! On a cold and damp day a jet wash was utilised to remove moss and lichen from fence prior to future wood preserver application.
